User Agreement
Last updated: January 23, 2026
This User Agreement outlines your responsibilities and what you can expect when using Godwit Sync. Please read this carefully alongside our Terms of Service.
Your Responsibilities
Data Ownership
You own all data that you migrate, synchronize, or process using Godwit Sync. We do not claim any ownership or rights to your data. You are responsible for ensuring you have the legal right to access, move, and store any data you process with our tool.
No Data Storage by Godwit Sync
Godwit Sync does not store, retain, or access your data unless you explicitly configure it to do so (for example, by directing output to a location we manage). All data transfers occur directly between your source and destination storage systems.
Migration plans and state files are stored locally on your systems in SQLite databases that you control.
Credentials and Access Keys
You are solely responsible for the security and management of:
- S3 access keys, secret keys, and any authentication credentials
- Service accounts and IAM roles used with Godwit Sync
- API tokens and license keys
Never share credentials publicly or commit them to version control. We recommend using environment variables or secure credential management systems.
Network and Storage Costs
You are responsible for all costs associated with data transfer and storage, including:
- Cloud provider data egress and ingress charges
- Storage costs at source and destination
- Network bandwidth costs
- Any third-party fees related to your infrastructure
Use the --plan-only mode to estimate transfer sizes before executing migrations.
Usage Boundaries
Intended Use
Godwit Sync is designed for:
- Migrating data between S3-compatible object storage systems
- Synchronizing data between local filesystems and S3 storage
- Scheduled backup and replication workflows
- One-time and recurring data transfer operations
Not Intended For
Godwit Sync should not be used for:
- Real-time data replication or streaming
- Database migration (use database-specific tools)
- Transferring data you do not have authorization to access
- Circumventing access controls or security measures
License Terms
What a License Grants
A valid Godwit Sync license grants you the ability to perform an unlimited number of runs, with each run able to transfer up to the licensed amount of data (e.g., 2 TB), as long as the license remains valid.
License Validity
A license is valid until either:
- The expiration date specified in the license, or
- The software version limit specified in the license is exceeded
Once a license expires or becomes invalid, you may continue to use the free tier (up to 50 GB per run) or purchase a new license.
Definition of a Run
A "run" is defined as a set of files combined by a unique run-id to plan and transfer. Each run tracks its own state and progress independently. The licensed data transfer limit applies to each run individually. You can have many concurrent or sequential runs, each allowed to transfer up to the licensed amount of data.
License Limits
If you need to transfer more data than your current license allows, please contact us at [email protected] to discuss options for higher capacity licenses.
